What-do-you-call-it? I’m Ken.
One Day, Noah, What-do-you-you-call-it, came into camp. we had heard that someone new had bought the forest, but we had no idea how new he was.
I’m a lumberjack. A man of the wood. When I heard that this farmer wanted to hire me and my crew, I What-do-you-call-it, did not know what to think. but there we were, a new owner and no where to go. Man, was he green!
Green yes, but he listened and he learned. Soon we were harvesting trees, and sending them down to the lumber mill. Then he bought that too.
I am amazed at how he is able to find the best people and encourage them to become better. But that’s what he does. He found Smitty to head up the ironworks, and found people to head up the architectural firm, another group to create the engineering firm.
Well, the first thing you know, he built a new mill, and we were not only cutting and clearing land, but he started drying the lumber, then selling it himself. Imagine, a cutting to market firm. everything under one owner.
He built wagons, that meant he needed roads, so he built them. Pretty soon, he had an industrial empire to rival no other. He would take challenges and make them into opportunities.
I remember well the night all the animals showed up. Did he panic? No. He just contacted the university and they sent an expert to help take care of the animals. In fact, the university has a research center here: built and funded by Noah. They research everything about the care and feeding of these animals. Then he built an industry around that. Well, we, what-do-you-call-it, took all the animals and built houses for them and houses for the workers. Then he opened it up to the public and charged admission. We call it Noah’s Zoological Garden. That’s where I met Ruth.
There’s more, but I need to get back to work. I hear a big tree calling me.
