Concerning the gag “one size fits none“: In the parable of the wedding feast, everyone is given a robe so they could attend the wedding. However, one person did not wear the robe and was kicked out.
In my interpretation of this parable along with other passages, all sons and daughters of Jesus’ family are given the robe of righteousness. Also, all who believe, are given the Spirit who gives gifts according to both the need to the Church and each individual. No two people are given the same combinations of gifts and talents. The Spirit is indeed tailored to our individual needs by God Himself. (After all, The Spirit is God, hence, “God in us”)
While the phrase “One size fits all” works as a satire here, “One size fits none” emphasizes the futility of the ‘one size fits all’ concept. Therefore, as each robe ‘fits as if tailored’, it represents the gift of the Spirit for all who believe.
If I were to rewrite this: (p 106)
With that, the two followed the mob into the entrance tunnel.
Ezer turned to Shama. “Nothing unusual here, except the pas-
sage is lined with racks filled with robes. They could have told us to
line up according to height and girth.”
“These will fit you. Put them on when you get through the
tunnel,” a lady said as she handed them each a robe.
“Thank you.” Shama and Ezer turned, joining the flow of traffic.
“Just doing my job. Keep moving. Your credentials are at that
table over there. Tell the sergeant your name and your current as-
signment.” She turned to the next team. “These will fit you. Keep
moving.”
“I’m getting tired of all these orders,” said Ezer, standing in
another line.
“One size fits all,” mumbled Shama. “That’s a laugh. It usually means ‘One size fits none’. I wanted mine tailored.”
Ezer chuckled as he slipped on his robe. “Hey! This fits perfectly.”
He modeled the garment with amazement.
Later, after their long journey, they will notice that the robes are still clean. This is the way of righteousness. despite our journey here on earth, the power of his forgiveness, continuously washes over us, keeping us clean.
